Never loan money to friends unless you can afford to lose the money and the friendship.

If you do it anyway, treat them like a bank would. Put it in writing. Set the terms. Be clear on the consequences.

If all that makes them uncomfortable, then lending them money probably isn't a good idea.

I learned this one the hard way. I trusted a longtime friend on a deal, and years later he still owes me about $600K.

The money is expensive. But having someone you care about either get aggressive or ghost you after it is way worse.

Before you wire money, let somebody outside the friendship look at the deal. They can ask the questions you're probably avoiding.
